Trophy for Kaimira Estate ITI Selection Riesling 2011 at NZ International Wine Show |
Premium Nelson producer Kaimira Estate has won the Champion Riesling Trophy for its 2011 Iti Selection Riesling at the New Zealand International Wine Show, the country's largest competition.
Winemaker Sally Albrecht said: "This result is a real thrill as our first release of a lower -alcohol wine, the 2010 Iti Selection Riesling, won a gold medal at the Royal Easter Show and is currently being poured to Air New Zealand business class passengers. That its successor has won the trophy in an international competition is a tribute to the efforts of our entire team"
The 2011 Iti Riesling is made from grapes grown under organic conversion on Kaimira Estate's vineyards in Brightwater and is fully accredited under the carboNZero programme.
In tasting notes prepared for the NZ International Wine Show trophy winners, wine writer Sue Courtney encapsulates the essence of the 2011 Iti Riesling: "Perfectly balanced acidity hones this medium sweet wine to perfection. A juicy lower alcohol style with zesty apple, honeysuckle and a long, refreshing and lingering finish."
"Iti" is Maori for "small" and the team at Kaimira Estate has opted to name their new wine style accordingly to signify that the wine has been crafted to be naturally lower in alcohol. The wine was made with lunch time and aperitif occasions in mind.
